Students Success with Common Core

To the right is a short video from commoncore.com that explains to parents the new common core standards.

This year Southeast Intermediate School will be teaching the new Ohio Standards called the Common Core. The Common Core focuses on developing the critical-thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills students will need to be successful. (common core.org)

Below is a Parent Guide to Student Success for the Common Core and ways to help your child with the 5th grade Common Core Standards. This document is available on the Ohio Depatement of Eduction website for all grade levels. Click here for the link to the Ohio Deparment of Education.

I have also included a documnet from the Ohio Department of Education website explaining an overveiw of the New Learning Standards. This will give parents information about the standards and what has changed.

My Classroom

In my classroom I use student centered activities to maximize student learning. Below is a Math words wall to help students understand 5th grade vocabulary, which examples and definitions are provided on each vocabulary card. The vocabulary words are from Granite School District's website, which I use to scaffold vocabulary word meaning in my classroom to help students with new Math terms.

Data Folders

In the 5th grade classrooms this year students will be using data folders to keep track of their progress towards student's learning goals. Students data folders will contain charts or graphs to help monitior student's progress on test, quizzes, pre-assessments, and post assessments, personal academic goals, and work samples. There is also parent communication sheet attached to the back of the student's data folders for parents to be informed on the progress of their child's learning.
